Enhancing Urban Water Management: Insights from the Recent NBS EduWORLD UbN Webinar “Join & Explore Nature-based Solutions”
UrbanByNature (UbN) and NBS EduWORLD recently launched a joint webinar series. Themed "Join & Explore", the first webinar explored the role of nature-based solutions (NBS) in revolutionising urban water management strategies using the example of Genoa. The event served as a platform for the presentation of innovative approaches and emphasised the importance of knowledge sharing and capacity building for the effective implementation of NBS.
The most important findings in a nutshell:
- Why NBS are important: NBS offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional engineered methods of urban water management. By mimicking natural processes, they not only solve immediate problems such as flooding and water quality, but also contribute to the long-term health of the environment and well-being of the community. The implementation of NBS requires a paradigm shift, interdisciplinary collaboration and extensive training to overcome barriers and achieve a sustainable impact.
- New technical approaches: The city of Genoa has experienced more than 80 floods and landslides since 1835, necessitating a critical reassessment of how to deal with river systems. The need was emphasised to no longer view rivers as adversaries, but to integrate them into urban planning through NBS. These solutions not only reduce flood risk, but also restore the ecological balance and increase the overall resilience of cities.
- Interdisciplinary solutions: The results of a student hackathon showed the potential of NBS to overcome specific challenges such as landslides and flash floods. The participants took a holistic approach and considered both upstream and downstream impacts. Key strategies included improving infrastructure, promoting interdisciplinary water management practices and advocating for supportive regulations and incentives. These measures aim to protect against flooding, improve water quality and promote local biodiversity, with significant environmental and social benefits.
- The role of capacity building: Throughout the webinar, capacity building was a recurring theme. The importance of equipping communities, planners and policy makers with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively develop and maintain NBS was emphasised. This includes not only technical training, but also fostering a deep understanding of local conditions and promoting co-operation between stakeholders. Effective capacity building ensures the successful implementation and sustainability of NBS in the urban environment.
For anyone interested in learning more about the diverse applications and benefits of NBS, it is worth attending the upcoming webinars in the series. These events will provide valuable insights and promote knowledge sharing to support the implementation of sustainable solutions in different urban contexts. The next webinar will take place in September - date to follow.
